'Stinging Truth' Reported in Middle School Newspaper

The first edition of the Middle School newspaper was published this month and is being touted as the first publication in five years to be coordinated, written, edited, and designed by students.

Called The Monthly Buzz, the seven-page newspaper features articles, interviews, memes, word jumbles, horoscopes, and more. The paper's tagline notes, "We report the stinging truth."

“It's the first time that an issue has been released with no adult help since (2019 alumni classmates) Autumn Boyce, Shaw Mettler, and Aya Wazaz ran the newspaper when they were in eighth grade,” explained Middle School Director and newspaper advisor Brian Christman.

Buzz editors include eighth-graders Isabella Aldo, Evan Heath, and Isabel Yang. The writing crew included eighth-graders Vedant Aryan, Will Bergherr Hall, Tabitha Gray, and Isabel Yang; along with seventh-grader Leala Goodall. Photography was provided by eighth-grader Jakob Ressler.

“The Middle School students really made it their own by including games and memes, which you don't normally see in the more serious Upper School paper,” said Mr. Christman.

Copies were printed for all Middle School students and were distributed during advisory meetings. According to Mr. Christman, plans are in the works to produce five to six additional newspapers this school year.

“The entire process is a great opportunity for participants to brainstorm and be creative, and they tend to help each other by riffing on the ideas they hear in our meetings. It's a really collaborative process, which makes it both challenging and fun,” said Mr. Christmas of the undertaking.
