Music Students Earn State Recognition

Nearly 20 choral and instrumental students have been selected to perform at the Connecticut Music Educators’ All State Festival in April.

The number of choral students – 17 – breaks last year’s record of 14 vocalists selected to the All State Choir. Four instrumental students also earned spots in the All State Band and the All State Orchestra, two of whom are also selected vocalists!

“I am very proud of our students' record-breaking accomplishments,” stated Middle and Upper School music teacher Matt Harrison. “Thirteen of our 17 are new to Connecticut All State, which is a tremendous achievement.”

Mr. Harrison explained that during the 2018-2019 school year, Hamden Hall had 14 vocalists earning All State spots and only five of those students were eligible to audition this year. In addition, three freshmen were selected this year while historically the school has only had one freshman earn a spot.

“Our students demonstrated outstanding sight reading ability – with seven students earning perfect scores,” he said.

Since 2015, Hamden Hall has steadily increased its numbers of choral students selected to the All State Festival. To audition for All State, students must first be selected to attend the Southern Region High School Festival, which was held last month.

Instrumentalists who made the All State Band include junior Parker Schultz on the alto sax, and sophomores Daniel Vash on flute and Bailey Smoko on trumpet. Senior Eduardo Pagliaro-Haque was selected to the All State Orchestra on oboe. Both Parker and Eduardo were also selected to perform in the All State Choir.

Vocalists selected to All State include:

Sopranos Samantha Aitro 2021, Vaani Chopra 2023, Helen Chen 2022, and Isabel Dunlap 2021; Altos Gaileen Andal 2020, Julia Pandolfi 2020, Gabriela Rosen 2022, and Georgia Yu 2022; Tenors Cooper DeGirolomo 2023, Andrew Neubauer 2021, Todd Tan 2020, Zean Wu 2020, and Daniel Zhang 2021; and Basses Timi Afolalu 2021, Justdinian Ding 2023, Eduardo Pagliaro-Haque 2020, and Parker Schultz 2021.

The All State Festival will be held at the Connecticut Convention Center April 2-4.
