Mathematics

The goal of the Mathematics Department is to facilitate for our students the development of those skills necessary for logical thinking and quantitative reasoning. In Algebra and Geometry, all students are grouped homogeneously. The B sections, and particularly the Honors sections, emphasize deeper understanding of the material and expose students to an increasing number of non-routine problems. Students entering Algebra II Honors and B level courses above this level will be expected to own or purchase a graphing calculator. Students should check with the department to find out what type of calculator is being used. Because of the sequential nature of mathematics, students enrolled in year-long courses must pass the second semester of the course in order to gain credit.
  • Math 7

Mathematics 7 is a balanced program; students have a wide range of learning experiences for maximum growth in concepts, skills, and problem solving. Our philosophy recognizes that to learn more about mathematics and to become effective problem solvers, students need a solid foundation in basic skills. Whole numbers, decimals, fractions, number theory, equations, integers, percent, ratio, and geometry are the major topics for the year. Skills are carefully developed so that students will build a repertoire of strategies necessary for creative problem solving. Calculator usage is integrated when appropriate.
  • Prealgebra

Students taking Prealgebra will be prepared in the first quarter with a rigorous introduction to the foundations of arithmetic, including mathematical operations and numerical expressions, fractions, and decimals. After mastering core fundamentals, students will get their first exposure to variables and algebraic expressions. This introduction will bridge the gap between arithmetic and algebra. Students will encounter variables in several different contexts including, but not limited to, exponents, primes and divisors, ratios and proportions, unit conversions and rates, percents, square roots, scientific notation, two-step and multi-step equations, and an introduction to functions & linear functions.
  • Pre-Algebra Honors

Pre-Algebra Honors is a middle school math course developed for accelerated learners. Students taking Honors Pre-Algebra will spend the first few weeks with a rigorous refresher on the foundations of mathematics, including mathematical operations and numerical expressions, fractions, and decimals. After proceeding from a demonstration of mastery of core fundamentals, students will encounter their first exposure to variables and algebraic expressions. This introduction to variables will serve as the core building block to rest of the course, where students will encounter variables in several different contexts including but not limited to: proportions, percentages, inequalities, exponents and scientific notation, two-step and multi step equations, square roots and irrational numbers, and functions & linear functions. Students will leave Pre-Algebra Honors with the foundation necessary to succeed in Algebra I Honors.
