Ernie the Hornet Giving Day
We are excited to announce our third
Hamden Hall-exclusive Giving Day!

Ernie the Hornet Giving Day on
May 3 is an opportunity for our entire community to come together to honor our history and shape our future. The best thing about this special day of giving is that it's steeped in tradition! Our beloved Ernie Russ was truly dedicated to the Hamden Hall mission of excellence - in the classroom, on the field, the stage, and throughout campus.

Our third annual Ernie the Hornet Giving Day is dedicated this year to our one community / ALL IN Campaign, which will fund three major areas of expansion and improvement on campus. Donations during this special 24-hour day of giving will support this campaign and help fulfill our strategic priorities for years to come! We all play a role in the success of our school and alma mater, and we need everyone’s help to solidify Hamden Hall’s position as one of the country’s leading independent schools.
We are One Community!

Davis Street Transformation
Your gifts to this area of the one community / ALL IN Campaign will support the transformation of our Davis Street property into a future home for our Middle School, Grades 6-8. Once complete, we’ll turn our attention to upgrading and repurposing classroom facilities on our Whitney Avenue Campus. These upgrades will include new Lower School facilities, enhancing Upper School classroom space, and creating specially designed areas for our growing co-curricular programs including music, theater, art, computer science, robotics, MakerSpace, and more.

The Gift of Hamden Hall
Your gifts to this area of the one community / ALL IN Campaign will support endowment, scholarship, and financial aid to continue attracting a diverse student body of outstanding abilities and prowess. Hamden Hall prides itself on the amount of aid we provide our families, and it is incumbent upon us to create access to a Hamden Hall education regardless of a family’s financial need.

The Hamden Hall Fund
Supporting the Hamden Hall Fund and our commitment to The Hamden Hall Experience is central to our one community / ALL IN Campaign. The student experience is at the heart of our school and the Hamden Hall Fund allows us to continue our commitment to helping every student be an important part of our community. It is imperative that we provide myriad opportunities for our students to explore their interests, talents, and passions. After all, our mission is to foster the “individual growth of every student.”

Who was Ernie Russ?

May 3, 1920 - Nov. 27, 2016

Ernie Russ began his career with Hamden Hall in 1947 as a science teacher. In his six decade-plus tenure at Hamden Hall, he also served as a coach, advisor, team statistician, equipment manager, and Building and Grounds advisor. Sadly, Ernie passed in 2016 but his legacy lives on. According to Head of School Bob Izzo in a tribute to Ernie upon his passing, "Ernie lived a long, rewarding, and honorable life that included service in the U.S. Armed Forces during WWII."

In 2007, more than 200 admirers attended a dinner that marked the establishment of the Ernie Russ Endowment & Scholarship Fund. When Ernie turned 95 in 2015, the Hamden Hall community rededicated a pine tree that had been planted in his honor in 2007. A month later at Commencement 2015, our community paid homage to Ernie with the presentation of the Hamden Hall Medal of Distinction for his exemplary service to our school.

History of Ernie the Hornet

On May 3, 2010, Ernie's 90th birthday, we named our school mascot
in honor of Ernie during an all-school celebration.
Thus the birth of Ernie the Hornet!

This year on May 3, our entire campus will celebrate with a day of school spirit and giving! We will enjoy birthday cupcakes during lunch for all students! In our classrooms, students will have fun with Hamden Hall and Ernie Russ trivia and participate in activities throughout the day that encompass all things Ernie Russ such as science and physical education. Students and faculty will wear green and white and anything Hamden Hall to show their support!
