Dr. Benjamin Spock, Class of 1919

Dr. Benjamin Spock was a pediatrician and the author of the 1946 book “The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care,” which helped legions of parents with their child-rearing responsibilities over the course of several decades.

By the time of his death at age 94 in 1998, Dr. Spock’s baby book had sold more than 50 million copies and had been translated into more than 42 languages. The ninth edition of the book was produced in 2012.

Dr. Spock attended Hamden Hall from age 12 to 16 – and noted the school as his “favorite,” in his 1989 autobiography, “Spock on Spock.” Following Hamden Hall, he attended Phillips Andover Academy, Yale College, Yale Medical School and Columbia University. While attending Yale, he won an Olympic gold medal in rowing in 1924.

He returned to his alma mater many times over the course of his life, including a speaking engagement in 1975 and as the keynote speaker at the school’s 70th Commencement Exercises in June 1982.
