New Student Lounge Harkens Back to Storied Log Cabin

A newly constructed student lounge featuring the latest in technology harkens back to the beloved Log Cabin that graced campus for 60 years until its demolishment in 1972.

Named The Ack during a recent dedication ceremony, the 800-square-foot building was donated by the Acquarulo family. Past parents and ardent Hamden Hall supporters Pam and Andy Acquarulo funded the building project in order to meet the needs of current students.

“They are generational contributors who are truly making a difference for current and future Hamden Hall students,” said Head of School Bob Izzo. “Pam and Andy have always been there for our school, anticipating needs ranging from classroom support when their children were small, to helping other upper schoolers travel to Disney World and elsewhere, to supporting building and major capital projects to help the school move forward.”

Pam and Andy have two daughters, Blake, who graduated with the Class of 2012 and is now completing her master’s degree at Yale University before proceeding to medical school; and Alex, Class of 2014, who graduated from Quinnipiac University this month and will pursue an MBA in the fall.

The Ack is located north of the former Log Cabin, which was situated where the current Whitson Building is, and is adjacent to the back parking lot. A walkway leads from the front of the newly remodeled Taylor Gymnasium to the lounge’s front door and an expansive patio allows for outdoor seating.

The interior is well designed with high ceilings and lots of natural light. Other features include long contemporary wooden tables with seating for 40 students. A large screen dominates one of the walls and the space is equipped with wifi for student devices.

Additionally, a bronze plaque bearing the names of the members of the Class of 2018 – the inaugural class to have enjoyed The Ack – has prominent placement in the building.

“We heard for years from our alumni about the former Log Cabin, which served the Hamden Hall community for decades and really became a legacy unto itself. I believe The Ack will have a similar destiny as students need and deserve a place of their own to gather and socialize during their free periods,” said Mr. Izzo.
