Alumnus Headed to UK for Residency

Jodi Amatulli
Gabriel Simerson, Class of 2016, will travel with the choir of St. Thomas's Episcopal Church, New Haven, to Wells Cathedral in the UK for a choral residency this summer, where his Evening Service will receive its European premiere. The piece, entitled The Wells Service, is a setting of the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis, which are the core texts of the distinctly Anglican sung service of Choral Evensong. Gabe began his choral experiences at Hamden Hall under the direction of late Lou Negri, and he later became affiliated with the St. Thomas’s choir, which has hosted Hamden Hall concerts. The Anglican repertoire is now Gabe’s primary interest, and he sings with the acclaimed choir of St. Paul's, K Street, when he's in Washington, D.C. where Gabe is a student at American University. Other compositions have been performed at St. Thomas's, St. Paul's, and Washington National Cathedral. The Wells Service will receive an American "preview" at the Three Choirs Evensong (with the choirs of St. Thomas’s, Trinity-on-the-Green, and Christ Church New Haven) at St. Thomas’s on May 6. Gabe is pictured with the choir of St. Paul's, K Street as they prepared to process from Washington Circle on Palm Sunday.
