1978 Alumnus Wins Service Award

Jodi Amatulli
Congratulations to Alumnus Curt Andrews Jr., Class of 1978, who will be honored as the Outstanding Volunteer Firefighter of the Year at the North Haven Community Service Awards Dinner on April 21.
Curt has been a Hamden Resident for 30 years. Born and raised in North Haven, he attended Orchard Hill Middle School and then Hamden Hall. He studied at Furman University in Greenville, S.C., where he earned his BA in Eastern European history and business administration. Football was a passion during his years at university, having acquired three Southern Conference football rings. In 1984, he entered the family business: Andrews & Blakeslee Insurance. He joined Hamden Hall as a coach in 1984 through the early 1990s. Currently, he holds the position of vice president with idrive, Inc. a tech company that he formed in recent years with his business partner to place fleet monitoring dash cameras in vehicles to record accidents and aggressive driving and promote safety.
In 1985, Curt’s involvement with the North Haven Jaycees led him to serve on the 1986 Bicentennial Commission and Parade Committee. During that time, the parade chair was coincidently a captain the Northeast Volunteer Company, who encouraged Curt to become a volunteer firefighter. He is certified as Firefighter 1, Hazardous Material Operations, and pump operator. He has served North Haven as part of their “Fire Police” since 2012. He is one of 20 North Haven firefighters who responded on 9/11 and went to the World Trade Center site. He has been involved in North Haven’s Food Drives for many years, and has also served the department as “Santa” for many years. One of the most touching acts of kindness as “Santa” was when a Delta Airlines flight attendant recommend that he help nearly 7-year-old Brantley Dobbs of Atlanta, suffering from an inoperable brain tumor, realize his wish for Christmas. Brantley wanted ornaments from around the world for his Christmas trees. The Delta Medallions, a club that includes Delta frequent flier customers such as Curt—a million mile customer who reached that milestone on his trip to see Brantley—and Delta employees, carried the word to encourage gifts of ornaments from all over the world. Curt encouraged his musician friends (formerly of White Snake and Journey) in Nashville to send ornaments, and much to his surprise, they offered to write and record a special song for Brantley. Curt traveled to Atlanta the Saturday after Thanksgiving, donning his Santa suit to see Brantley, which was arranged through Delta as a surprise. Sadly, Brantley died 10 days later.
To join the public in honoring Curt, call 203-248-6800 for tickets.
