Lower Schoolers Become Business-Savvy!

They’re engineers during the regular work week, but on a recent day, called J in a Day, workers from Medtronic in North Haven transformed into classroom educators to share real stories and concepts from the business community.

Now in its third year at Hamden Hall, the J in a Day program was expanded this year to include Grades 5 and 6. Previously, Grades 1 through 4 were treated to the experiential learning opportunity that is conducted by Junior Achievement (JA).

Sixth-graders oohed and aahed when Edgar Cardoso, a quality manager at Medtronic, announced that they’d be making commercials as part of the day’s “It’s My Business” lesson plan.

“We’re going to learn about entrepreneurship,” he explained to students while also offering a little background information on himself. “I’m an engineer so I love STEM stuff like science and math.”

Next door in JA Education Manager Joshua Kelly’s classroom (also known as Mrs. Calandrelli’s classroom!) students were affixing stickers to themselves featuring the names of occupations they’d like to one day attempt. Veterinarian, lawyer, medical school, and soldier were some of the offerings.

According to Lower School Director Lorri Carroll, the sixth-grade program encouraged students to use critical thinking to learn entrepreneurial skills.

“Those skills included knowing customers' wants and needs, launching effective marketing campaigns, and creating detailed business plans. By examining the characteristics of successful entrepreneurs, students learned that a belief in one's self can make positive things happen in life,” she maintained.

Neighboring classrooms featured grade-level content in themes ranging from “Our Community” in second grade to “Our Nation” in fifth grade. All lessons included hands-on activities such as the “Heads-Up” game in first grade and the “Piggy Bank” game in third grade.

Fifth-graders engaged in an “Innovation Nation” activity that challenged them to create solutions to real-world problems. One of the innovation cards stated “alarm clock,” meaning that students had to think of a creative way to solve the age-old issue of not being to wake up to the alarm clock’s squeal.

Junior Achievement programs foster work-readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy skills and use experiential learning to inspire students to dream big and reach their potential.

As a follow-up to the J in a Day program, Hamden Hall sixth graders have been invited to serve as greeters and welcome guests at Junior Achievement’s upcoming New Haven Business Hall of Fame. During the induction ceremony, Hamden Hall Trustee Kyle Ballou-Johns will be honored for her business acumen and commitment to community.
