Thespians Advance to National Stage

Twelve students recently attended the 2018 Northeast Educational Theatre Festival and increased Hamden Hall’s presence at an upcoming special program of the International Thespian Society that assesses and recognizes significant student achievement in theatre.

Three seniors earned the honor of performing in their respective individual events at the International Thespian Society’s National Individual Events at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in June. In order to attend, students must first have received a “Superior” rating at a chapter festival.

At the recent Northeast Festival, held at the University of Southern Maine, Nate Bloom was rated superior in musical theatre, Sophia Lawder was superior in acting/monologue, and Yoni Hirshfield was superior in sound design.

Joining them in June will be seniors Tait Brencher and Charley Tiernan, who received Superior ratings at a conference in the fall. English and performing arts teacher Lisa Daly noted that last year Hamden Hall sent two students to Nationals.

“The Thespian trip to Maine allowed our students to broaden their theatre experience. Not only do they get a chance to meet students from schools all over the Northeast, they also get to partake in dynamic workshops that sharpen their skills and introduce them to new ideas,” said Miss Daly, who attended the festival with colleagues Charlie Alexander and Allison Ehrenreich.

Mr. Alexander – himself a theatre guru! – taught a workshop at the Northeast Festival on “Viewpoints,” a physically improvisational way to create character and story, according to Miss Daly.

Joining Nate, Yoni, and Sophia at the festival were: Tait Brencher, Deming Rohlfs, Teigan Landsfield, Dylan Balter, Donte Berberena, Kiley Herlihy, Aya Wazaz, Ainsley Baker, and Josh Torello. Students participated in workshops ranging from costume design, to Shakespeare, to stage combat.

“Being part of this internationally recognized organization creates a large theatre community for our students, and receiving feedback on their performances is so valuable to their growth,” maintained Miss Daly. “Our theatre community at Hamden Hall is truly special and unique, and continuing to grow every year.”
