Giving Back One Sock at a Time

In their first community service project of the school year, Lower Schoolers collected nearly 400 pairs of socks that will warmly cover the feet of those less fortunate in the Greater New Haven area.

Hamden Hall for years has donated socks to Christopher Martins Restaurant in New Haven, which provides meals and home packages of toiletries and clothing each year on Thanksgiving Day. Up to 500 working poor and homeless people take advantage of the restaurant’s generosity.

The Lower School will continue to put its best foot forward with additional community service projects, such as the annual Stuff a Bus in November and a toy drive in December, both of which benefit Hamden Community Services. Also in November, students will create Thanksgiving cards for the Homebound. Fifth-graders in Sue Bennett’s Art Cottage were busy this week creating their ‘Hallmark’ masterpieces. Colorful paper, scissors, and even glue guns were in full force to help students express their sentiments.

“The kids love the projects and are very excited to participate,” maintained Lower School Director Lorri Carroll. “It’s part of our mission at Hamden Hall to teach students social responsibility. Each of our service projects throughout the year helps our students do this in a developmentally appropriate way.”

Other planned projects include Hugs for Soldiers in January, a Global Project in February and March, and the school-wide Earth Day initiative in April, which varies depending on grade level.

The Lower School concludes the giving year with another collection drive in May for Hamden Community Services and will work with Director Sharon Jones on the most-needed item at the Keefe Community Center. Last year the Lower School conducted the Bathroom Brigade and collected toiletries for the center.

Mrs. Carroll noted that students are involved in all community service projects from start to finish. During their weekly assemblies, photos from projects and thank yous from the different groups students have supported are shared.

“We really appreciate the entire community's support on all of these undertakings,” she said.
