Ross G. Douthat, Class of 1998
Ross Douthat, Class of 1998, is a published author and a blogger and columnist for The New York Times.
Ross graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University in 2002, where he was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa. While there he contributed to The Harvard Crimson and edited The Harvard Salient.
In April 2009, Douthat became the youngest regular op-ed writer in The New York Times after replacing Bill Kristol as a conservative voice on the publication’s editorial page.
Before joining The New York Times, he was a senior editor at The Atlantic. His published books are Bad Religion: How We Became a Nation of Heretics (2012), Grand New Party (2008) with Reihan Salam, and Privilege: Harvard and the Education of the Ruling Class (2005).
Douthat has also served as a film critic for National Review and has contributed to The Wall Street Journal, The Weekly Standard, the Claremont Review of Books, GQ, Slate, and other publications.
At Hamden Hall, Ross was class salutatorian and in 2013 he earned an Alumni Achievement Award. Ross was also the Commencement 2013 keynote speaker.
“I hope what you learned here will come back to you when you need it most,” he told the 56 members of the Class of 2013. “Not in the temporary period of extraordinary freedom that awaits you now, but in the richer, deeper years of truly grown-up life beyond.”
