MayFest 2023: A Festival of Music, Arts, and Community

The spacious lawn of the Davis Street campus was alive with musical performances, sports games, delicious food, and other activities and crafts as the Upper School community enjoyed the annual MayFest celebration.

MayFest 2023 was organized by the efforts of Upper School Dean of Students John Greenawalt and faculty member Charlie Alexander with the help of seniors Presley Owens and Leo Southam. Juniors Casey Armstrong, Evan Heath, and Micah Mfuko served as the festival emcees.

“MayFest is one of my favorite daytime events of the year,” commented Mr. Alexander. “Bringing the Upper School community together to have fun, enjoy time with one another, and celebrate the various talents of our students is a beloved tradition that we should always hold on to.”

With lawn chairs and blankets laid out across the lawn, students and faculty members enjoyed a leisurely afternoon full of fun festivities. From a Boba Tea drink booth and henna tattoo station to a tie-dye shirt station sponsored by Pride Alliance to a volleyball game sponsored by the Black Student Union and Volleyball Club, there was something for everyone. Other activities included games of CamJam and spikeball along with decorating records with acrylic markers sponsored by the Dance Club.

Over on the main stage, several students lent their voices and talents to musical performances and dances. Freshman Flynn Carney dazzled the audience with her rendition of the song Love Story by Taylor Swift while fellow freshman Alma Goren-Eisenberg presented an original poem. Senior Analiese Driscoll sang with juniors Alexa Bettencourt and Alexandra Matthews on the guitar. Members of the Dance Club performed and freshman Jiayan “Lan” Liu performed a traditional Chinese dance.

The creative, artistic talents of the students were celebrated with a curated art exhibit organized by Arts Department Chair Caryn Azoff. The colorful pieces ranged from painting to ceramics to multimedia designs. The art show was on display inside of the Davis Street Castle.
