The Business and Artistic Duality of 1993 Alum Reggie Tucker

Class of 1993 alumnus Reginald “Reggie” Tucker works in the world of finance day-to-day; but in his spare time, he is a creative mind who turns recycled materials into art.

“I see a natural beauty or artistic quality in everyday things,” said Reggie. “I also have an appreciation for highlighting the beauty that’s in something that normally just gets recycled. And that’s where the term 'recycled abstract' comes from.”

All of his artwork uses repurposed materials outside of their initial intended use, which is transformed into a new art form.  The process of obtaining recyclable materials begins by looking through online peer marketplaces, thrift shops, in the streets and alleyways, or his own recycle bin. He fuses together different pieces, textures, and patterns to create his collection. He has become fascinated with magazines as they are artistic pieces themselves. With the magazines, he rolls the individual pages in a thoughtfully chosen manner to highlight a specific word or image that emphasizes the message he is trying to convey.

In addition to the physical form of recyclable art, Reggie has turned older pieces from his collection to digital NFT pieces, which allows the work to take on a new identity. Reggie noted that the goal of his artwork is to “evoke a feeling of wonder, surprise or a newfound appreciation for 'art' that can be discovered in reusing what is usually ignored or discarded.”

Most recently, Reggie was a featured artist in an exhibit at the Roth + Taylor Fine Art/ CadFab Creative Gallery, located in the Culver City Arts District of Los Angeles, Calif. He will be participating in The Other Art Fair at the Barkar Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif., at the end of March.

“I believe all of us have some form of creative energy flowing through us,” said Reggie. “It’s just a function of how strong that current is and whether you want to focus on it or not. I’ve always been surrounded by art and music. There’s always been some form of creative current flowing through me.”

Reggie graduated from New York University Gallatin School of Individualized Study in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and pre-law. He obtained his MBA from The Wharton School in 2006. In 2021, he accepted the role of Managing Director at Manhattan West, a global strategic investment firm. He works in the Venture Capital group where he is tasked with investing funds across the firm’s Fund of Funds strategy. He currently lives in Long Beach, Calif.
