Class of 1998 Spotlight: Alumna and Lifer Ekita Shaw

While she couldn’t make it back under the pines for our special Class of 1998 re-shirting ceremony,  alumna Ekita Shaw was nonetheless happy to hear about this new tradition of commemorating the longevity of Alumni Lifers.

It’s been 25 years since Ekita and her four fellow Lifer classmates were “shirted” during a special assembly on campus. Now residing in Miami, Ekita was unable due to work commitments to return under the pines for the special ceremony.

Ekita currently serves as a senior conference manager at Blavity, Inc., a media tech company that is home to the largest network of platforms and lifestyle brands serving multifaceted lives of black millennials. She previously worked as the operations director for Informa Markets, a digital platform that connects buyers and sellers in specialized industries to trade, innovate, and grow through events, trade shows, and exhibitions. In her role, she worked in the boating industry and managed five events including the Miami International Boat Show, which featured more than 1000 exhibitors and boats.

After leaving our halls, Ekita enrolled at Temple University and graduated in 2002. She went on to obtain her master’s degree in global hospitality management from Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University. Ekita is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Ekita said despite being in Floria, she loves spending time with her family in Connecticut. Her sister, Kanika Shaw, graduated with the Class of 1992.

These days, Ekita said she still loves basketball and enjoys traveling. She most recently journeyed to Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa, along with the cities of Casablanca, Marrakech, Essaouira, and Errachidia in Morocco.
