Cooking Activity with Grade 8

Eighth-grade students and teacher Jill McLeavy brought their classroom unit lesson on Spanish food and beverages into Lender Refectory to make their own horchata from scratch.

“There is no better way to bring a class lesson on food and drinks to life than making one of the items from scratch,” said Miss. McLeavy. “Some of the students have never tried horchata before so this is both an educational and fun activity.”

Working with cafeteria manager Kevin Stawitz, students were tasked with reading the instructions in Spanish as they took turns adding and mixing ingredients, which consisted of rice, condensed milk, cinnamon, and vanilla. A whir of the blender resulted in a yummy treat.

Later this month, the class will travel to the Long Wharf food trucks in New Haven to further practice their Spanish and enjoy diverse culinary options.
