2012 Alumnus Upholds Family Law Legacy

Class of 2012 alumnus Marc Cafasso has joined the long family line of lawyers after passing the bar exam in July of 2021. He now works as an associate attorney for the law firm Jason Stone Injury Lawyers in Boston, Mass.

“The most rewarding part of passing the bar is that I now have the ability to help people experiencing different types of legal challenges and life obstacles,” said Marc. “No matter what type of problem someone may be facing, the law and legal system can be an overwhelming experience, and now being capable of helping someone through something like that is a good feeling.”

Marc’s interest in law, particularly personal injury law, can be attributed to his family. His grandfather, Herman Bershtein, started Bershtein Law Center, a personal injury firm in Hamden, in the 1950s. The family business, which is housed in the same building on Dixwell Avenue that Herman grew up in, is standing strong to this day with his mother Jan Bershtein at the helm along with his uncle, Richard Bershtein, and aunt, Joy Bershtein. He noted that his degree and interest in politics turned into an interest in law, which his family greatly supported.

He said his father, Arthur Cafasso, emphasized the importance of helping those in need and through that piece of advice Marc knew the personal injury field of law was the right career choice.

“This is a special accomplishment to me because of the years of hard work that have gone in towards achieving this goal,” said Marc. “I am also very fortunate to have such a loving and supportive family that kept the faith in me when I had moments of doubt. Without the love and support of my mom and dad throughout this process, I do not know if I would have made it to this point.”

Not only is it a personal accomplishment, but a meaningful one as Marc’s sister, Alexa Cafasso, also passed the bar exam. The siblings passed the bar within 24 hours of one another. Marc noted that it was special to have his sister going through the same process at the same time, whether that be the last few years of school or studying for the bar this past summer. “Having someone so close going through the same process was reassuring for sure.”

Marc credits his time under the pines with providing him a solid educational foundation and the necessary resources to pursue his chosen career. He noted that he thoroughly enjoyed his entire experience at Hamden Hall from start to finish, and the relationships he forged with classmates and teammates are going strong to this day.

“I am fortunate for this entire ride that I have been on that has gotten me to this point, and I wouldn't change it for the world,” said Marc.

Marc graduated in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in political science from Union College in Schenectady, NY. Following college, he worked in Boston for a year before moving to New York City to work for an additional year. He enrolled at Suffolk University for law school and graduated in 2021. Currently, Marc lives in Boston, Mass., and his long-term goal is to return to the family business and continue in his grandfather’s footsteps.
