Valedictorian and Salutatorian Named for Class of 2021
Head of School Bob Izzo announced at last week’s Upper School Assembly that Nathaniel Thomas and Xuzhu "Ruth" Wang are, respectively, the Valedictorian and Salutatorian for the Class of 2021.
Nathan, who will attend Amherst College in the fall, came to Hamden Hall in seventh grade. He is involved in myriad activities and clubs on campus including Model UN, MSI, the Cross Country team, Rho Kappa, and GSA.
“I'd like to extend my congratulations to the entire senior class. It's been a trying year, but we've gotten through it as a community,” said Nathan.
Nathan revealed that he will major in chemistry and continue his studies in Mandarin at Amherst. He said that he “began to love” chemistry during Dr. Frank Gasparro’s Honors Chemistry and AP Chem classes.
“As for Mandarin, I've studied the language for the past six years with Ms. Wei, and I've really begun to love the language and culture,” he explained.
The Hamden Hall Experience for Nathan has been “the wonderful sense of community,” he said. “I've made great relationships with both students and teachers over the past six years, and Hamden Hall creates a tight-knit community like no other.”
Ruth will head to McGill University in the fall. She came to Hamden Hall as a sophomore and said she has appreciated the fact that the school is a supportive, warm community.
“Teachers and advisors are understanding and really care about each student. When you have questions, they are always there to help. I really value the time I spent with my friends and the conversations with the teachers,” said Ruth.
Ruth noted that she loves literature and credits Hamden Hall’s English teachers for that passion. As such, she will major in literature and/or physics and philosophy in college.
“Our teachers are enthusiastic about teaching and always love to have conversations about literature with the students. The school also has a very strong science program, in which every science teacher is serious about the subject, though they are also fun in class. The lab reports we wrote will definitely help us in future academic researches,” maintained Ruth.
