With Patent Knowledge, Alumna Shares with Students

Ellen Rich, Class of 2010, is a regional account manager with IFI Claims Patent Services, a leading supplier of patent data for resellers and innovators in the research and healthcare sectors. She has been with the company since June 2018 in the capacity of identifying, engaging, and developing new regional accounts.

“I also oversee current accounts and resolve client issues with the help of my Support and Content Team,” she said.

Our own third-graders recently benefited from Ellen’s knowledge of patents when her mom, Lower School science teacher Claire Rich, engaged her to Zoom with the students. Ellen advised the budding inventors that many patents are held by children. When asked about the “weirdest” patent she had seen, Ellen referred to the “Animal Toy Patent,” US Patent No. 6,360,693.

“It’s a weird/funny patent because the inventor was able to patent a stick by making very broad and elaborate claims that all refer to a drawing of a stick. The amount of work involved to patent something that is just a stick is mind boggling,” said Ellen.

After attending Hamden Hall, Ellen went to Wilkes University where she played basketball and graduated with a degree in psychology. She then began working as a brand standards partner at Edible Arrangements HQ in Wallingford.

“I worked my way up to become a Learning Program Manager in the Training Department at Edible until the summer of 2018. After that, I joined IFI Claims Patent Services as a sales consultant and ultimately moved up to the regional account manager role.
