Hornet Hoops Make their Debut

Bud Kohler
The Beckerman gymnasium finally saw some basketball action on Thursday evening, but it certainly had a different feel with no fans in attendance to set the place rocking. Similar to the fall, there is no official league play this winter, with just a limited schedule of contests. Nevertheless, the Varsity Boys were just thrilled to be tossing the rock around when they faced off against St. Luke’s.

Coach Sean Doherty and the players shared some thoughts and feelings on the experience. Coach D commented, “After a very long layoff of not playing due to this Covid, it was so great for our guys to finally get back on hardwood! It didn’t look pretty at times but we loved the effort each player gave when he got in the game.  We got huge performances from senior Corey Walters, who carried the squad in the 1st half, and senior Ethan Doherty who made three straight threes in the second. Junior Tyler Callahan played his best game at Hamden Hall with 16 points and plenty of rebounds, and junior point guard Carson Benigni scored 10 points while dishing out the assists. Competing at a high tempo while wearing masks and having no fans at the home game after many, many months off was no easy task, but I could not have been prouder of how both teams handled it “

When asked for his perspective, hot shooting guard Ethan Doherty responded, “I thought for the amount of practice time we have had we played extremely well. We definitely need to work on our defense as a team. But even though it is a very short season, I’m just excited for the games.”

Tyler Callahan added, “It felt amazing to get back on the court with a group of great guys. I think we played well with the short amount of practice time we had, but I also think there is a lot of room for improvement. I got the chance to get hot in the game and I’m very happy my teammates trusted me.”

Walters led the Hornets with 18 points, while Alex Puhl added 10, James LaFrance 7, Dubell Beckett 3; and Xavier Carter and Tyler Gibson added a bucket each.

Though there is no opportunity to hoist another FAA or New England banner this year, just the opportunity to compete and find some normalcy on the court will make this a championship season for everyone involved.
