Swim Team Scores Repeat Win over Hopkins

Bud Kohler
Certainly one of the toughest aspects of our health crisis to affect students is the impact on athletics. After wrestling with one of Mr. Sokoloff’s DBQ essays or tackling one of Mr. Flamm’s math tests, many students normally look forward to hitting the fields and enjoying a healthy workout. Not surprisingly, however, the winter has continued to see limitations on what our student-athletes can do; yet most teams have been actively practicing and getting the most they can out of the season, even if it requires some creative adapting to make it work.

That has been the case for the Varsity Swim team, with a preseason requiring staggered practice times and only one person in each lane. Happily, they have been able to stage several meets that satisfy safe distancing. While the Hornets swim and time their events in the Beckerman Center, opponents do the same at their campus and the teams post and compare results to determine the winners. On Wednesday, the Boys Varsity repeated what had never been accomplished till last year in besting crosstown rival Hopkins by a score of 85-74.

Though not quite as deep as last year, the core of the team to win the school’s first ever New England Championship is back, and they proved too strong for the Hilltoppers. Led by 5 outstanding seniors, the win will undoubtedly be a highlight of the school year for the entire team.

Congratulations to coaches, swimmers, and parents. So if NEPSAC is not holding a final meet, can we claim to be repeat New England Champs?!!!
