'At A Distance,' Homecoming 2020 Still Spirited

While Homecoming 2020 will look a little different than in years past, all three divisions are nonetheless creating a Homecoming “experience” for students inclusive of theme days and spirited activities.

Traditionally, Homecoming at Hamden Hall each fall is a two-day event chock-full of sporting events, assemblies, and social activities. Homecoming 2020 will feature dress-up theme days for students culminating with Green and White Day on Friday throughout all of the grades. Homecoming activities will also take place among the established cohort groups.

In the Upper School, advisor groups on Friday will celebrate Homecoming digitally as they view videos created by some of the sports teams and extracurricular clubs. Students will also participate in a game of Kahoot.

Seniors will attend a seniors-only breakfast that Upper School Co-Director Kim Porto helped plan. The event will take place on the “Senior Porch” at our 20 Davis Street property. The breakfast takes the place of the annual senior tailgate and utilizes the front portico of the Castle, which has been assigned exclusively to the senior class for this school year.

Upper School students are also able to participate in an ongoing game of sticker tag this week, as coordinated by senior Steven Zhang.

“Homecoming is one of the special traditions we have at Hamden Hall. It was important to us to keep as many of the yearly activities as possible to make Homecoming 2020 a special event,” said Mrs. Porto.

The Upper School Student Government designed special T-shirts for Homecoming 2020 that students in all divisions will don on Friday. This year’s theme features a cartoon rendition of a turtle with a crown on in tribute to The Turtle King, a.k.a. Spencer Chase from the Facilities Dept., who rose to fame during the spring when students were in their virtual classrooms participating in distance learning. The Turtle King remained on campus and cared for the school’s turtles. The Friday afternoon feedings in our Bayer Family Lower School Science Center were videotaped and aired for our school community to enjoy.

"The idea is to incorporate the current pandemic into our school life. We added some of the changes in teaching methods like Zoom to illustrate this year’s differences," explained senior Manxi "Samantha" Yang who worked with other members of the Upper School Government in determining this year's T-shirt theme.

Over at the Skiff Street Athletic Complex, a socially distanced field day is planned for students in Grades 7 and 8 on Friday. According to Middle School Director Brian Christman, “friendly competitions” between different advisor groups will take place.

“We hope that the day will be festive and fun,” said Mr. Christman.

Lower Schoolers will also engage in “field fun and games,” said Lower School Director Lorri Carroll. Cohort-contained activities such as relay races will be hosted at Augur Field.
