Alumna Interning at United Nations Agency

Sylvana Lewin, Class of 2012, began an internship with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in September.

The UNHCR is a United Nations agency that supports the protection of refugees, forcibly displaced communities, and stateless people, to assist in their voluntary repatriation, local integration or resettlement to a third country. It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.

Sylvana’s internship marks the third semester of a master's in international public management at Sciences Po's Paris School of International Affairs. In Geneva, Sylvana is working with UNHCR at the Global Protection Cluster. After her graduation from Vanderbilt University in 2016, Sylvana moved to Accra, Ghana, for a Princeton in Africa Fellowship at the African Cashew Alliance. She then joined MEST Africa. At MEST, she worked with entrepreneurs from all over Africa as the community manager for Accra.

In fall 2019, Sylvana moved to Paris to pursue her master’s. She is specializing in Africa and human rights. Sylvana traces her interest in making the world a better place to her Hamden Hall teacher, Paul Gustafson.

“I’m really excited about this because I’ve wanted to work in protection since I was 14 and read A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier for Mr. Gustafson’s class. This is one step closer to my dream of working in the child protection sphere.”
