Varsity Lacrosse Coach Ups His Game With Professional League

Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse Coach Kevin Warnock – who also teaches history at Hamden Hall – spent a month in Utah this summer with some of the best lacrosse players and coaches in the world.

As Director of Gameday Operations and Equipment Manager for the Premier Lacrosse League, Kevin helped coordinate and manage the nationally televised PLL Championship Series in July. The 16-day, 20-game quarantined tournament aired on NBC during what was originally scheduled to be the window for the 2020 Olympic Games, giving those unfamiliar with the sport an opportunity to get hooked.

“This is my second year with the league,” explained Kevin. “This year with COVID-19, we created a quarantined tournament where players and staff were tested four times throughout our month in Utah. Working with PLL allows me the opportunity to work with the best players and coaches in the world.”

Kevin grew up in Somers, Conn., and played collegiately at DIII Springfield College. As a senior, he competed in the North South All Star Game and went on to coach at the college level for 12 years – at Western New England University, Bates College, and as head coach at Manhattanville College.

For the Hornets, Kevin has led his teams to two FAA Championships during his six years as head coach. His varsity teams also competed in three consecutive New England Championships. During spring 2020 – after learning that the lacrosse season was canceled due to the pandemic – he organized a national Wall Ball Challenge with the head coach from Avon High School. More than 55 high school teams throughout the country and Canada participated as well as one pro team.

In his work with the PLL Championship Series, Kevin was in charge of anything that happened on the field once the game started. He was also in charge of inventory and ordering of equipment inventory and player needs for all seven teams.

Kevin further noted that the series, which was fan-less, garnered four games on NBC and 14 on NBC Sports network.

“I started with the Premier Lacrosse League in their inaugural season last year. We are a tour-based league, so this type of tournament allows us to gauge market trends around the country in terms of how many people are interested in lacrosse in specific areas and possibly where a franchise or team might be located in the future,” he maintained.

Kevin added that the league is “making a push to compete with the major sport leagues by offering full-time salaries, health insurance, and profit sharing.”
