Tom Iampietro, Former Faculty Member

Former faculty member Tom Iampietro passed away on March 5, 2020, from advanced heart disease. After retiring in June 2019 after 17 years of service to our school community, Tom and his wife, Canny Cahn, had moved to Wiscasset, Maine.

Upon his retirement, the Tom Iampietro Scholarship was established "to honor Mr. I's contributions and dedication to our school."

For Mr. I, as his students and colleagues often called him, his years at Hamden Hall capped an industrious career in education that spanned nearly five decades. Tom arrived “under the pines” in the fall of 2002 as the chair of the History Department. Previously, he worked for 25 years at Stoneleigh-Burnham School, a private boarding and day school in Greenfield, Mass.

Longtime colleague and friend Sue Toole, a Hamden Hall college counselor and history teacher, crafted the following insight on Tom:

“Tom was larger than life and added so much to the fabric of Hamden Hall whether teaching A.P. U.S. History, A.P. Modern European, or his beloved Maritime History. His booming voice was ever-present. Tom was a cheerleader at more varsity events, especially woman’s sports than could be counted, he was at every dance and prom sporting his white dinner jacket! He was an active Senior Dean always advocating for our students at Hamden Hall. Tom planned and chaperoned the senior trips to Disney. He enjoyed listening to the students and their adventures at Disney Parks. He wanted the classes to make memories.

As most of you know, during college breaks his office would be overflowing with alums who wanted Tom to know what they were doing in college, and he also mentored more students with respect to graduate schools and job connections. He was truly an amazing human being who encouraged our students to achieve excellence in their lives. He will be missed by many and was a friend and mentor to many including myself. As per Tom’s wishes, there will be no funeral or service.”
