1964 Alumna Celebrates 55th Reunion

Jodi Amatulli
Gayle Campbell Maynard, Class of 1964, retired from Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield two years ago. During her 49-year career, she worked her way up through the ranks from the billing department to managing the data warehouse for the entire Northeast. While Gayle worked, her late husband, Ron, finished his college degree and always encouraged his wife to do the same. While recovering from knee surgery, Gayle decided to do just that. In just a couple of years, she graduated Cum Laude with a 4.0 GPA from Albertus Magnus College. Ron, who died in 2013, was more proud of Gayle than she was of herself.
Gayle has two adult children, Michael and Heather, and two granddaughters, ages 26 and 10. She enjoys volunteering at St. Johns Episcopal Church in the outreach department as well as managing their treasury. She also has a therapy dog named Rosie who visits area nursing homes and Yale New Haven Hospital.
Gayle went to first grade at Hamden Hall before transferring to a public school. She returned to Hamden Hall for sixth grade and said she loved every year she spent here. “Every teacher was special beginning with Mrs. Bear in sixth grade to Marjorie Stewart and Ernie Russ in my senior year.”
Gayle remembers when the Taylor Gymnasium was built and recalled that is where they stored all the “beautiful costumes used in the operettas” in which she enjoyed performing during Upper School. She added that, “Miss Stewart was mortified when the girls wore leotards while dancing the Can Can in The Merry Widow.” Gayle also remembered that the initial naming of the school’s mascot, Pine Tree Saps, was replaced with the more dignified Hornets. For Gayle, who returned “back home” to celebrate her 55th class reunion in October, Hamden Hall remains a family affair. Her sister, Dr. Judy Campbell, is Class of 1961, and her cousins, Harriet “Penny” Hindinger Duncan and Barbara Hutt Dillaway, are 1953 graduates.
