Down the Home Stretch, Hornet Teams Make Runs at Post Season Bids

Bud Kohler
On Wednesday, the team celebrated Senior Night, honoring their five seniors: Molly Anderson, Brianna Bell, Destinee Gabriel, Kelly Thomas, and Cherry Zheng. The team sent their seniors out in style with a 4-3 win over Greens Farms on a rainy Wednesday afternoon. HH took an early lead off a Molly Anderson goal, only to see the visiting Dragons score twice to take the lead. The Hornets tied the game at 2 apiece when Brianna Bell put one away. The game was back and forth during the second half with the teams trading goals, till junior Sam Aitro scored the game winner with 3:29 remaining. Destinee Gabriel was stellar in goal and tied her career high with 9 saves. With such a positive run, Coach Emily Anderson and the team are hoping for a New England Tournament bid.

Boys Varsity Soccer has also found success since Homecoming, going 3-1-1, and likewise are looking forward to tournament play. Matteo Romero, Joe Tenedine, Gabe Sabatelli, Alex H-D, and Liam Kohler all found the back of the net during that run. This included 5-0 thrashings of both Storm King School and then Eagle Hill. Sandwiched in between was a tough loss to FAA rival GFA 4-2. The Hornets then made the long haul to the “Quiet Corner” where they battled back to force a 1-1 tie with non-league foe Mariannapolis Prep, with senior keeper Zach Giugno coming up with several clutch saves. The GFA defeat set up a must win situation for the Hornets on Wednesday when they travelled down to Stamford to take on the King School with a spot in the FAA Tournament at stake. The host Vikings were sharp and drew first blood. However, with a few tweaks to the line-up, Coach Dan Pinkerton’s squad responded with two quick strikes to take a 2-1 lead into the halftime break. Sabatelli, a junior midfielder, hit a spectacular free kick from 25 yards out to secure the 3-1 victory. With that win, the Hornets grabbed a spot in the Fairchester League tournament, and will play Hopkins over on the Hill on Tuesday. The win also elevated the Hornets to a 5th place ranking in New England. A victory over MacDuffie on Saturday at home will almost certainly guarantee an invitation to the New England Tournament where the Hornets have not made an appearance in more than a decade. The team record is currently 9-3-2.

Girls Varsity Soccer has an outside chance of also snagging a New England bid, as they maintain momentum with a number of positive results. Since Homecoming, the Hornets have tied Holy Child 1-1, and beaten Cheshire Academy 4-3 and Williams School 2-0. Saturday’s showdown away at Greens Farms will be pivotal.

Senior ironman, John Bazaar broke the tape first, and helped the Boys Cross Country team win the South Kent Invitational. Marlon Ward finished 8th, Steven Zhang followed in 9th, while Michael Lee came in 11th, and John Golioto finished 13th. The Hornets finished tied with EF Academy 42-42, but HH took home the trophy thanks to Adam Shi, who finished 16th and ahead of EF’s next best runner. The top runners will travel next Saturday to the New England Invitational to be held at Hebron Academy in Maine.

Kudos to Coach Nally Sahin and the Varsity Volleyball team for securing their first win with a 3-2 victory over Chase Collegiate. The relatively young squad has used this year to mature and polish their skills. And though they had had to endure the string of defeats, they never quit and were rewarded with a much deserved W on Wednesday.

There are still a few home games to take in this weekend before the post season begins. We hope to see you out there. Go Hornets!
