Hornets Launch a Homecoming Success!

Bud Kohler
Boys Varsity Soccer continued its winning ways with a convincing 7-1 win over EF Academy. The Hornets were firing on all cylinders as they scored twice within the first 10 minutes on slick passing and deft shooting by the likes of Gabe Sabatelli and Alex H-D. Joe Tenedine scored the goal of the match with a blistering shot from distance that rang off the back post and into the back of the net. Meanwhile, on the next field over, Field Hockey edged a Greenwich Academy squad 2-1. Senior co-captain Brianna Bell scored first off an assist from senior co-captain Molly Anderson to put the Hornets up 1-0 with 14 minutes remaining in the first half. GA would tie the game up early in the second half, but it would be Anderson scoring the game winner off an assist from freshman Kaci Benoit with 11 minutes remaining. With tough defense and senior Destinee Gabriel in goal making two huge saves, the Hornets were able to hold off the Gators. Hamden Hall improves to an impressive 7-2
To crown the afternoon, Varsity Football staged a late comeback to defeat Evergreen league rival New Hampton of New Hampshire 34-31. The Hornets took a 6-0 1st quarter lead from a 5 yard run by Jordan Benoit. They extended their lead with a 20 yard TD run by Zach Conlan., only to see the visiting Huskies knot it up at 14-14 going into the half. After an NH field goal, the Hornets responded with a dramatic 80 yard kickoff return by Conlan for a 22-17 lead after three quarters. In the final frame, New Hampton pulled into the lead yet again with former Hornet Nick Bailey running for a pair of touchdowns. Undaunted, the Hornets made a near miraculous comeback when first, Matt Wright latched onto a 10 yard TD toss from James Laubstein, and then Benoit, who finished the game with 109 rushing yards, completed the scoring with a 22 yard TD dash with only 14 ticks remaining on the game clock! Though he threw two picks, QB James Laubstein went 14/23 for 182 yards. Kai Ellis led Hamden Hall’s defensive effort with nine tackles and Mike Dematteo had eight tackles and a sack. After the game Coach Joe Linta remarked, “After they (New Hampton) went up two scores, the heads never went down. We kept believing that it’s never over till it’s over. I am so proud of all the guys.” Hamden Hall is now 3-2 on the season.
Saturday's athletic contests clearly reflected the Homecoming weekend theme with results that were ‘out of this world’.
