Midseason Update & Homecoming Preview

The Varsity Football team pitched its first shutout of the year this past Saturday with a convincing 20-0 win over the Berkshire School from Massachusetts. The win avenged a loss to Berkshire in 2017, which ruined a perfect season for the Hornets and stopped a 20 game win streak. Standout Jordan Benoit led the Hornets on the ground with some hard running and a touchdown, while James Laubstein and Zach Conlan also pitched in with rushing touchdowns.  Mike DeMatteo paced the defense with 10 tackles and Corey Walters had an interception for the Hornets who moved to 2-2 with the win. Coach Joe Linta was pleased with the win stating, "Our defense really came together and the guys are starting to play with a lot of excitement. We made a lot of mistakes on offense (3 fumbles) but otherwise played well. With so many new guys, we're just starting to approach what we can be as a team." The Hornets face off against the Huskies of New Hampton, a traditional power from the New Hampshire lakes region in an Evergreen League Tier 1 contest.
Last week Cross Country hosted Williams, King, and Christian Heritage. Though HH came in second to Williams, many Hornets finished strong. Senior John Bazaar came in second overall, followed by senior Steven Zhang in 5th, sophomore Marlon Ward in 10th, and freshman John Golioto in 13th out of 54 runners. Though the girls did not field a full team, senior co-captain Rosa Wang took home the bronze, with Lucy Xu finishing 8th, Catherine Zhang at 11th, and Ruth Wang at 16th in a field of 21. This Saturday Cross Country hosts EF Academy, Greenwich Country Day, and Capital Prep.
Girls Varsity Soccer and Volleyball will also be in action Saturday. Anchored in back by the outstanding goalkeeping of Gabi Pesticci in goal and the solid defense of the likes of sophomore Madisyn D’Errico and junior Bella Mecca, the team has begun to gel. Mia Brandfon and Ellie Moffat, along with tireless senior captain May Cervone have helped create attacking chances, and the Hornets reeled off three straight wins against Watkinson, MacDuffie, and Westover before coming up short against a top notch St. Luke’s squad on Thursday. They hope to rebound on Saturday when they face a rematch with Watkinson School from Hartford. It’s been a learning and growing year thus far for the young Varsity Volleyball, who will battle against EF Academy in a 12:00 noon kick off to an afternoon full of what should prove to be exciting athletic contests.

Be sure to come out and enjoy the festivities. Go Hornets!!!
