1982 Alumnus Reflects on Change

Jodi Amatulli
Herb Emanuelson, Class of 1982, started a new job at The Hartford in May as assistant director of marketing. When asked for an update, Herb reflected as the creative he is!

Are you ready for change? Cause it’s coming…even if you think you’ve got it all figured out.

Your kids go off the college. Your parents need more help. Marriages end. Unexpected job changes. Personal health scares. You might even experience some combination of these changes in the same year or two.

Well, if this sounds familiar, what can you do?

Talking with friends helps. Counseling can give you some much needed emotional support. You can hire a job coach to refresh your LinkedIn profile. There are online and in-person support groups. You can join a gym or eat Ben & Jerry’s. But whatever you do, don’t give up.

You might not believe things can get better --- especially when you’re in the midst of chaos, confusion or depression. But you can come through to a new, different and even better place. New love. New job. New appreciation for life.

But how?

Get out of your comfort zone. Try something new. Take a class. Talk with an expert. Update your resume. Go on a blind date.

As Dory said in Finding Nemo, “just keep swimming.”
