Jeff Goldman 1964 Remembers Hamden Hall

As Jeff Goldman, Class of 1964, celebrates his 55th Hamden Hall reunion this year, he also looks forward to his 50th wedding anniversary, and continues to enjoy a fulfilling life of retirement and community service in Boynton Beach, Fla.
After Jeff graduated from Hamden Hall, he headed to Boston University, but eventually transferred to Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Neb. Jeff graduated with a B.A. in English from Nebraska Wesleyan, where he belonged to Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) and was pledge trainer. “Don’t think Animal House,” he jokes.
At NWU, Jeff met his future wife Cindy, and the couple will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on Sept. 6.
After college, Jeff was drafted into the U.S. Army and did a tour of duty in Vietnam. “That experience gave me the opportunity to have a little time to think about what I might want to do with my life, and how I always wanted to go into radio when I got out of the Army.”
Pursuing his goal, Jeff landed a job with a small radio station in Meriden, Conn. The station was owned by a large chain and eventually, Jeff was promoted to program director for four of their stations. His work required some moves, and finally Jeff and Cindy landed in Detroit where Jeff recalls that he came to the realization that “there was no one over 35 in the business!” Thus, Jeff changed careers to electronic equipment sales.
After years of working for others, Jeff started his own business and was challenged by running a company with 15 employees. “I took every lesson I learned at Hamden Hall, college, the fraternity, and the Army to become a successful entrepreneur.” The biggest lesson that made an impact was one that Jeff gleaned at Hamden Hall: “Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself or the system.”
Jeff recalled of his days under the pines, “We had such a great class, and the turmoil of the ’60s seemed to draw us together a lot more than one might expect. At our 50th reunion in 2014, it was interesting to learn that many of us had shared the same insecurities about school and life, but we never talked about them until our milestone gathering.”
Beyond work, Jeff has found fulfillment in community service. He served as past president of the Detroit Grand Prix Association, was a volunteer coordinator of the Marathon of the Palm Beaches, and is currently a Lt. Colonel with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Volunteer Services Unit, working with more than 1,600 volunteers.
Over the years, Jeff has acknowledged his years at Hamden Hall by giving back with continuous, annual gifts to the Hamden Hall Fund. He and Cindy have also remembered the school in their estate planning by including Hamden Hall as a beneficiary in their will.
“I was lucky to have the opportunity to get an education at a great institution, and Cindy and I would like to help the next generation do the same. With education seemingly under siege by economics and outside forces, it’s critical we all take an active role in helping tomorrow’s children.”
