Hornets Open Spring Season

Bud Kohler
Is it spring yet? The temperature and field conditions aren't ideal but the spring season has officially begun for the Hornets. Varsity Softball drew a tough opener, facing off against a powerful Choate squad and losing 24-2 in 3 innings. Pitcher Callie Silvey took the loss. Kelly Thomas walked and hit a solid triple to score one and drive in the other Hornet run.

Varsity Baseball dropped a pair of tough ones. On Wednesday, the team battled at Canterbury. After the Hornets took 4-2 lead in the top of the 3rd, the Saints responded to tie it in the bottom of the frame. They then took the lead for good in the 6th with some timely hitting off Ryan Doherty, who took the loss. The final score was 8-4. Highlights included Billy Gioulos with a hit and an RBI, Dennis Gamester with a double and a run scored, and Cameron Maldonato with one RBI hit and a run scored. On Thursday, the team hosted Marianapolis Prep but again fell short 7-6. The Hornet bats were hot early as they seized a 4-0 lead in the 1st inning.and were up 6-0 after four solid innings thrown by Cam Maldonato. The wheels fell off, however, in the final frames, including a four run final inning by the visitors to get the win. Maldonato certainly helped himself out, hitting a double and driving in 3. Joe Liucci and Danny Carbone also had doubles, while CJ Kuselias had two hits and scored twice, and Ryan Doherty had two RBIs in the losing effort.

On Saturday, Boys Lacrosse, last year's FAA champs and New England runners-up, opened up against a feisty Chesire Academy squad.and came away with a solid 11-4 victory. The teams traded goals early, with the Hornets going into the half with a slim 5-3 lead. The game remained tight in the second half, 7-4, much of it due to opening day jitters. But in the fourth quarter, the Hornets asserted their dominance over the Cats. Chase Lilly led the team with four goals and an assist. Zach Giugno added three goals and 3 assists, while Alex DiVincentis had 2 and 2, and Jeff Nugent scored twice as well. Sam Jewett was superb in the net and helped anchor a defense that returned only two starters in Jared Morrisey and Konye Taylor. However, Coach Warnock has high expectations for plenty of improvement with the addition of long sticks Aiden Hebert, Paul Gregory, and Aidan Cheney. Junior LJ Pezzolesi is another new face who will add plenty of muscle to a talented midfield that also includes Sam Tomak and Jackson Lalond. The team plays at Wooster School on Tuesday and then travels to crosstown rivals Hopkins on Saturday.
