Lower School Science Fair Erupts in Ingenuity

Budding scientists – 74 in all! – displayed their ingenuity and creativity during the recent Lower School Science Fair for students in Grades 4 through 6.

Items regularly found in grocery store aisles were popular among the student projects – after all, who hasn’t wondered which potato chip brand yields the highest grease count.

Popcorn, sugar, milk containers and more were also up for inquiry and study. One project determined the “outcome of a banana” in light versus darkness while yet another studied the effects of gum chewing.

According to Lower School science teacher Steve Jewett, students have been working on their projects in school and at home over the past five weeks.

“Everything from surface tension, to expanding gases, to static electricity, to Bernoulli's principle were researched, investigated, and demonstrated by some very confident young scientists. I am so proud of the effort and passion demonstrated by these developing students and look forward to this project every year,” maintained Mr. Jewett.

For more than three decades, the Lower School Science Department has coordinated the science fair in order that students demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of various science topics and principles. Family members, faculty, and fellow students milled about Lender Refectory viewing the projects and listening to presenters discuss their research and findings.
