Scholarship Fund Honors Beloved Alumnus

The passing of a beloved Class of 1987 alumnus has led to a scholarship initiative in our community.

Carl Newton attended Hamden Hall during his high school years and remained involved in the school community up until his death on Nov. 27, 2018. Now his longtime friend and classmate, Ben Clark, is looking to honor Carl’s memory by providing an opportunity for a future Hamden Hall student.

“Carl was a special friend to me and countless others, and he loved many things—Hamden Hall among them,” explained Ben, who also graduated with the Class of 1987. “To carry on his legacy of warmth and kindness, we have established the Carl Newton 1987 Scholarship Fund that will provide financial assistance to a current Hamden Hall Country Day School student. I believe that this initiative is a meaningful way to honor Carl’s spirit of generosity and his compassion for others.”

Ben worked with the Hamden Hall Development Office to establish the fund’s guidelines, which include that the recipient must exemplify Carl’s high standards that embodied the core values of Hamden Hall: Respect, Support, Participation, Excellence, and Accountability. The student must be in good academic standing and will also be involved in the life of the school outside of the classroom, whether it be sports, the arts, technology, etc.

While at Hamden Hall, Carl was a three-sport athlete; playing football, basketball, and baseball. After graduation, Carl attended Southern Connecticut State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in food service management. He also honed his cooking skills, which he learned from his grandmother, and at one time owned a restaurant and catering company.

For many years Carl shared his knowledge of the food service industry with longtime pal and former classmate Nick Scasino, who is co-owner of Fireside Bar and Grill in New Haven. Carl also worked as the nutrition supervisor at St. Raphael’s Hospital in New Haven, where he tended to the dietary needs of patients in the Intensive Care Unit. In 2011 he began bottling and selling his already famous barbeque sauce, Big Newt’s.

According to Jodi Amatulli, Hamden Hall’s Director of Development and Alumni Relations, the goal of the scholarship fund is to generate $25,000 to ensure that the money will be endowed and held in perpetuity over the long-term.

“This will mean that Carl’s memory will live on forever at Hamden Hall, and his smile will always be remembered,” she said.

Donors to the fund will be acknowledged to Carl’s family and listed in Hamden Hall’s 2018-2019 Annual Report of Giving.
