Instrumental and Choral Students Awarded Regional Competition Spots

The success of Hamden Hall’s music program continues as both instrumental and choral students have earned spots to attend the Southern Region High School Music Festival sponsored by the Connecticut Music Educators’ Association.

Sixteen Upper School students have been awarded the honor to perform on January 14 and 15 at Maloney High School in Meriden. As a result of their selection, each student is now eligible to audition for the Connecticut All-State Festival that will take place this spring.

The three instrumental representatives include: Senior Bailey Smoko who was selected on trumpet for Jazz Ensemble as well as classical trumpet; sophomore Levi Johnson on tenor saxophone for Jazz Ensemble; and freshman Sissi Zhang on violin for Orchestra.

The 13 choral student representatives include: Seniors Helen Chen, Chloé Curtiss, Ashley Hu, Gabriela Rosen, Sophie Schonberger, and Georgia Yu; juniors Vaani Chopra, Cooper DeGirolomo, Justinian Ding, Analiese Driscoll, and Candice Yang, and sophomore Monte Meng and freshman Jacob Schonberger.

According to Upper School Vocal and Music teacher Matthew Harrison, Analiese Driscoll earned the top vocal score with 195/198. He further noted that cut-off scores for participants were “unusually high” due to COVID restrictions with regard to the reduction of the ensemble size.

“I have never seen cut-off scores this high (even at the all-state level). Hamden Hall will continue its tradition of having a strong presence in the choral honor ensembles in our state,” said Mr. Harrison.
