Hamden Hall Runs With New Cross Country Invitational Hosting Duties

After being held for more than a decade at a nearby private school, Hamden Hall took over the hosting duties this year of what is now officially the Hamden Hall Cross Country Invitational.

More than 200 runners in Grades 3 through 8 took to a two-mile course at the Skiff Street Athletic Complex Oct. 24 for the event. Besides Hamden Hall, participants came from The Country School, Foote School, Independent Day School, Our Lady of Mercy Prep, Renbrook School, and Watkinson School.

“This was our first year hosting the event. It was originally at Chase Collegiate School and they announced that they could no longer host. I have attended it for the past 12 years and loved the event for the runners so I helped coordinate to get it in place at Hamden Hall,” explained Lower School science teacher Claire Rich, who also coaches the Lower School Cross Country team.

The race consisted of two divisions – one for boys and one for girls. The top 10 finishers received medals.

This was the third and final meet for the Grades 3-5 Lower School Cross Country team; while the Middle School team, made up of runners in Grades 6-8 and coached by Middle School Director Brian Christman, has another to go next week.

“Our schedule this year had six meets with the Invitational being the fifth,” Mr. Christman said. “The Invitational itself has been a big team effort on the part of Hamden Hall, with a lot of people pitching in to make this event happen.”

Also involved in the planning was Assistant Athletic Director Joe Fontana who noted that Hamden Hall’s decision to take over the hosting duties was a win/win for the school and its student-athletes.

“These are good events to bring a lot of runners together to compete at various competition levels,” he maintained. “It's also good exposure for our school community and our facilities.”
