Educating students in PreSchool through Grade 12

A Needed Tool in Today's Classroom

Our iPad program began in the fall of 2014, when all seventh and eighth grade students were first required to bring an iPad to school. Our iPad initiative was carefully and thoughtfully implemented over the course of two school years, with the initial exploration of a 1:1 program having taken place in the fall of 2012. After much research, much experimentation in the classroom, and a great deal of professional development for our faculty, we went forward with a 1:1 iPad program. As we begin the 2017-2018 school year, we have decided to allow two new devices: the HP Chromebook x360 11 G1 and the Acer Chromebook Spin 11. We believe that these two Chromebooks offer similar functionality to the iPad at a reasonable price point.

The impetus for our mobile device program could be distilled into one simple thought:
In the 21st century, technology is not a compartmentalized component of the curriculum that can be contained in one or two computer labs on campus; rather, technology is, in a sense, baked right into almost everything we do.

Mobile Devices:

  • are durable, lightweight, extremely portable, and the battery life is far superior to that of a laptop. Students can also log in instantaneously
  • allow students to access course materials and conduct research quickly
  • allow students to unlock their creativity with its many functions. More than just a computer, it can be a camera, movie studio, voice recorder, e-reader, notebook, etc.
  • provide an organizational tool that will help students to manage their many responsibilities
  • will enable students to collaborate more effectively, especially with the school's investment in Google Apps for Education
