SUMMER ACADEMY
Middle & Upper School Courses Grades 7-12

ENGLISH
WRITING FUNDAMENTALS
Section 1: 10-11 am June 23-July 11
Tuition: $315 Grades 7-12
This course will provide intensive practice in critical writing skills needed for research papers. Analyzing the question, brainstorming, outlining, writing, editing, and close proofreading of drafts are all skills that will be taught. Appropriate footnoting, end noting and bibliography techniques will also be reviewed.

LITERATURE OF THE SEA (.5 CREDIT)
Section 1: 9-11 am June 23- July 11
Tuition $ 750 Grades 9-12
The sea as metaphor for the soul (or as symbol of the Freudian subconscious) is a powerful trope in literature ranging from Homer’s Odyssey to Melville’s Moby Dick. This course explores several disparate authors’ manifold stances toward the sea as companion for contemplation or, on the other hand, destructive enemy to be feared (or, at least, respected). Representative readings include: Moby Dick; Old Man and the Sea (Hemingway); Sea Wolf (London); Captain’s Courageous (Kipling); and Mutiny on the Bounty. Field trip to Mystic Seaport is part of this offering. This course is taught by Mr. Piazza, Head of Hamden Hall's English Department.

MIDDLE SCHOOL 101
Section 1: 9-10 am July 14- August 1
Tuition $ 315 Grades 7-8
This course is specifically designed for incoming middle school students who want to hone their study skills, acclimate themselves with the Hamden Hall’s Middle School, and understand some of the challenges they may face in middle school. Our curriculum will revolve around our summer reading program and will include test taking skills and the writing process. We encourage new students to take advantage of this unique opportunity, but this course will certainly benefit other new middle school students. This course is taught by Mr. Piazza, Head of Hamden Hall's English Department.

UPPER SCHOOL 101
Section 1: 10-11 am July 14- August 1
Tuition $ 315 Grades 9-12
This course is specifically designed for incoming upper school students who want to hone their study skills, acclimate themselves with the Hamden Hall’s Upper School, and understand some of the challenges they may face in high school . Our curriculum will revolve around our summer reading program and will include test taking skills and the writing process. We encourage new students to take advantage of this unique opportunity, but this course will certainly benefit other new high school students. This course is taught by Mr. Piazza, Head of Hamden Hall's English Department.

FINE ARTS
MAKING MOVIES
Section 1: 9-11 am June 23- July 3
Tuition: $600.00 Grades 9-12
This will be a practical course involving the use of some cutting edge technology. Basic camera usage will be covered as well as the bells and whistles of the school’s cameras. If students have Mini- DV cameras of their own, they are encouraged to bring them to class. Editing will also be taught using Final Cut Studio Pro, video industry standard non-linear, non-destructive editing software. Beginning with simple cut and paste editing, students will go on to learn how to add music and voice overs to videos, make music videos, edit narrative footage, do titles and credits, and work with a wide range of special effects. Limited to 4 students.

COMPUTER
KEYBOARDING AND SOFTWARE INTEGRATION
Section 1: 9-10 am June 23-July 11
Tuition: $315 Grades 7-12
Students will improve their keyboarding speed and accuracy using the Swain Library on-line resources to assist them in revising, editing and enhancing written assignments. The class will be divided between keyboarding and software integration based on the student’s keyboarding proficiency, which should be the priority.

STUDY SKILLS
BACK TO SCHOOL STUDY SKILLS: A REFRESHER COURSE
Section 1: 9-11 am August 18-22 Grades 6-8
Section 2: 1-3 pm August 18-22 Grades 9-12
Tuition: $250
This course reviews and hones the study and organizational skills necessary for success in the middle and/or upper grades. Students will learn and practice strategies for organizing material, time management and understanding texts, while developing an individual, workable method for note-taking. The importance of developing study styles suitable for individual needs will be stressed.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES
FRENCH I (CREDIT)

Tuition: $900 Grades 9-12
This intensive course is equivalent to a full first year French course which focuses on basic French vocabulary and grammar, along with an introduction to French culture. It is designed to prepare students to enter French II in the fall.

SPANISH I (CREDIT)
Section 1: TBA June 23-August 1
Tuition: $900 Grades 9-12
This intensive course is equivalent to a full first year Spanish course which focuses on basic Spanish vocabulary and grammar, along with an introduction to Spanish culture. It is designed to prepare students to enter Spanish II in the fall.

LATIN I (CREDIT)
Section 1: TBA June 23-August 1
Tuition: $900 Grades 9-12
This intensive course is equivalent to a full first year Latin course which focuses on basic Latin vocabulary and grammar, along with an introduction to the culture of ancient Rome. It is designed to prepare students to enter Latin II in the fall.

INTRODUCTION TO MANDARIN CHINESE (CREDIT)
Section 1: 9-10 am June 23- August 1
Tuition: $900 Grades 9- Adult
This course focuses on the four basic tones and pronunciation of the basic sounds in the language. New vocabulary and grammatical concepts will be ntroduced. This class will also include lectures each week on a different topic regarding China or Taiwan such as the history or politics of those countries.

MATHEMATICS
PRE-ALGEBRA
Section 1: 8-9 am June 23-August 1
Tuition: $630 Grades 7-9
Students will preview/review number facts, arithmetic operations, operating with whole numbers, decimals, fractions and percents, factoring integers, solving equations by replacement, and graphing the number line.

ALGEBRA I PREVIEW
Section 1: 8-9 am June 23-July 11
Section 2: 8-9 am July 14-August 1
Tuition: $315 Grade 9
Students will review the necessary skills needed for success in Algebra 1. Students will then preview computations including properties of real numbers, solving linear equations and graphing, polynomials (foiling and factoring). Tackling word problems form an integral part of this course. Strongly suggested for freshman.

ALGEBRA II PREVIEW
Section 1: 9-10 am June 23-July 11
Section 2: 9-10 am July 14-August 1
Tuition: $315 Grades 9-12
Students will review computations including the properties of real numbers, solving linear equations and graphing, simplifying and factoring polynomials simplifying rational expressions including the use of radicals and some imaginary numbers, and the use of quadratic equations. Strongly recommended as a preparation for Algebra II.

GEOMETRY PREVIEW
Section 1: 10-11 am June 23-July 11
Section 2: 10-11 am July 14-August 1
Tuition: $315 Grades 8-12
Students will become acquainted with the use of definitions, postulates and theorems, particularly as they apply to the “if-then” logic of proofs; points, lines, planes, segments and angles; properties of triangles and other geometric figures; congruency and similarity; right triangles; circles; areas and volumes. Strongly recommended as a preparation for Geometry.

GEOMETRY (CREDIT)
Section 1: 9-12 am June 23-August 1
Tuition: $900 Grades 9-10
This course provides, through deductive reasoning, a comprehensive study of the theorems, postulates, and definitions associated with plane, solid and coordinate Geometry. This course is offered to students who have completed Algebra I and is intended to broaden their conceptual skill, strengthen their organizational skills, and develop an aggressive, yet flexible approach to finding solutions to problems. Special attention is given to proofs, constructions and locus problems. Department permission required for Hamden Hall students.

TRIGONOMETRY FOR CALCULUS (CREDIT)
Section 1: TBA June 23-August 1
Tuition: $900
Trigonometry for Calculus is designed for students who want to strengthen their preparation for Pre Calculus or who intend to pursue the study of Advanced Placement Calculus in the upcoming school year. In this course, students will learn the definitions and methods utilized with the trigonometric functions, reference triangles, the unit circle, right triangles, oblique triangles (Laws of Sines and Cosines), inverse trigonometric functions, and identities (Pythagorean, addition, and double angle). The course will also emphasize the practical applications of trigonometry and the trigonometric concepts that are utilized in the development of Calculus. Department permission required for Hamden Hall students.

SCIENCE
CHEMISTRY (CREDIT)
Section 1: 8-10 am June 23-August 1
Tuition: $900 Grades 10-12
This intensive Chemistry course is intended for students who have a strong interest and demonstrated ability in science and math. A major concept of the course is how the atomic theory has evolved in explaining the properties of matter, especially behavior of the elements and their compounds. Other topics include the mathematical and theoretical treatments of the gas laws, the mole, calorimetry, equilibrium and solutions, and introduction to acids/bases, and oxidation/reduction reactions. These concepts are reinforced by experiments, demonstrations and use of models. Current problems of science are considered in magazine reports. Department permission required for Hamden Hall students.

CHEMISTRY PREVIEW
Section 1: 9-11 am June 23-July 11
Tuition: $630 Grade 9-10
This three week course will focus on helping the student develop the science process skills that are vital to achieving success in a high school chemistry class. Emphasis will be placed on developing study skills, use of symbolic language, and observation techniques. This will be done through the study of basic chemistry concepts such as periodicity, compound naming, the factor-label method, and experimentation. Successful completion of this course will allow the student to enter a full year chemistry course with increased self-confidence and a solid foundation to build upon.

HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE PREVIEW
Section 1: 9-11 am July 14-August 1
Tuition: $ 630 Grades 9-10
This three week course is geared towards incoming 9th graders and students who are new to Hamden Hall. An in-depth examination of the scientific method with an emphasis on biological concepts will provide the foundation for this course. We will learn and apply science process skills including experimentation, observation, and higher-order thinking techniques. This course will give the student an idea of what to expect in high school science courses. Specific topics that will be introduced include DNA and molecular biology, microbiology, and a small individual research project.

KAPLAN TEST PREP
Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. starting JUNE 24th
Course fee: $899 (Hamden Hall students pay $800)
Kaplan Test Prep PSAT and SAT classes at Hamden Hall this summer! The Kaplan course features twelve interactive class sessions, diagnostic practice tests with computerized feedback and detailed explanations, and an individualized curriculum, which identifies each student’s strengths and weaknesses. Kaplan students also receive home study materials, which include their lesson book, SAT software, vocabulary and math flashcards and more! Classes will be taught by expert Kaplan instructors.
