SUMMER ACADEMY

LITTLE HORNET’S SUMMER ACADEMY
(These two programs are also suitable for the combination program)

SOUNDS, LETTERS AND MORE!
Session 1: 9-11 am June 23-July 11
Tuition: $600 Grades Pre K-1
This program has been designed to foster literacy development through the use of fun and engaging resources, activities, and instructional routines that are based on scientifically-based reading research. Principles of the Haskins Literacy Initiative, which are an integral part of Hamden Hall’s reading program, will be included in this summer course. Explicit instruction in the word attack components of literacy such as phoneme awareness, code instruction, and fluency will be tailored to meet the specific needs of students who sign up for this course. Listening comprehension, vocabulary and oral language development will also be addressed. Snack and outdoor play will be provided.

1, 2, 3, COUNT WITH ME!
Session 2: 9-11 am July 14-August 1
Tuition: $600 Grades Pre K-1
Young children are surrounded by numbers! In this class the children will develop their observational skills as well as good number sense. Math learning happens without rote drill, but it does not happen on its own. Young children need math concepts presented intentionally and systematically, yet in a way that respects their level of understanding. This class will use art, science, cooking and game playing to learn about numbers. Snack and outdoor play will be provided.

READING
EXPLICIT READING AND SPELLING INSTRUCTION WITH FLUENCY PRACTICE
Section 1: 9-10 am June 23-August 1
Tuition $630 Grades 2-3
This program has been designed to explicitly instruct the word attack components of literacy development. Code instruction and fluency practice will be tailored to meet the specific needs of students who sign up for this class. Principles of the Haskins Literacy Initiative, which are an integral part of Hamden Hall’s literacy program, will be included in this summer course. As a result, scientifically-based instructional routines will be used to increase reading fluency of both fiction, and non-fiction text. Consequently, background knowledge and vocabulary which are critical for constructing meaning in reading will also be developed.

READING COMPREHENSION
Section 1: 10-11am June 23- August 1
Tuition $ 630 Grades 4-6
The goals of this course are to improve reading comprehension, enhance the reading experience through discussion and critical thinking, and motivate students to read more. Comprehension is conquered through a variety of techniques including response centered instruction, direct modeling of reading strategies, literature circles, and invested student discussions. In addition, students will be taught the macrostructure of literature, an appropriate leveled novel will be assigned and each student will complete activities to practice and demonstrate their skills.

WRITING
READ, WRITE AND PUBLISH!
Section 1: 9-10 am June 23-July 11
Tuition: $315 Grades 4-6
Each week, as students preview various writing styles, and write, revise, edit and publish their own books, they will study the writing process to improve sentence structure, grammar, paragraphing skills, and vocabulary. The use of graphic organizers, including Inspiration software on the computer, will be featured as part of the course.

EXPOSITORY WRITING
Section 1: 9-10 am July 14-August 1
Tuition: $315 Grades 4-6
Students will focus on writing formal expository compositions and a mini research paper. Planning strategies, note-taking, library skills, and organizing factual information into well written sequential paragraphs will be stressed. Great preparation for writing in content subject areas such as social studies and science, and for responding to guided reading questions in language arts and reading classes!

THE POETRY SHOP
Section 1: 9-10 am June 23-August 1
Tuition: $630 Grades 4-6
Children will explore the power of words and language while learning to write various forms of poetry. They will be given opportunities to sharpen their use of figurative language tools such as simile, metaphor, imagery and personification to bring their thoughts and observations to life. Students will write free verse poetry, limericks, diamante poems, and haikus. Class will consist of poetry readings, discussion of craft, writing and poetry sharing. Children will conclude the six week course with a poetry reading for parents and will bring home a portfolio of their work. Students also will read the works of various poets.

MATHEMATICS
MATHEMATICS WORKSHOP

Tuition: $630 June 23-August 1
From understanding number concepts to problem solving, students will be actively involved in their math learning. Stress will be placed on concept and skill development, using a variety of manipulative materials, games and computers.

MATHEMATICS WORKSHOP 2
Section 1: 9-10 am Grades 5-6
Tuition:$630 June 23-August 1
Small group instruction focusing on specific learning styles and incorporating a variety of methods and materials will be provided in the areas of math concepts, operations, and applications. Students will have areas of difficulty addressed.

A hands on approach to exploring the wonderful world of science! Students will experience a wide range of science activities. They will develop their own questions about science and seek their own answers. Experiments! Activities! Fun! Field Trips!

ONE WEEK ENRICHMENT CLASSES
WOODWORKING 1
Section 1: 9-11 am Grades 2-6
Tuition: $195 June 30-July 3 (4 days)
This beginning level class in woodworking will introduce students to skills such as hammering and nailing, gluing, sanding and finishing precut projects designed by David Bennett. The students will make a number of projects that will help to develop the above skills. No prior woodworking experience needed. Students must bring their own hammers. Enrollment limited.

WOODWORKING 2
Section 1 9-11 am Grades 2-6
Tuition: $235 July 7-11
This intermediate level class in woodworking will introduce students to skills such as hammering and nailing, gluing, sanding and finishing precut furniture projects designed by David Bennett. The students will make a number of projects that will help to develop the above skills. Because of the increased difficulty level of the projects, prior woodworking experience is desired. Students must bring their own hammers. Enrollment limited.

HOW THINGS ARE MADE? HOW DO THINGS WORK?
Section 1 9-11 am Grades 2-6
Tuition: $210 July 14 –July 18
What is the best way for someone to learn how a piece of equipment is made? The answer: Take it apart. We will use hand tools screw drivers and wrenches to “dissect” electronic equipment and mechanical items to see if we came discover how these machines are put together and how they work. Fully hands on and loads of fun!

MUSEUMS AND MORE
Section 1: 9-2:30 pm July 21 – July 25
Tuition $250.00 Grades: 2 -6
Spend the week exploring Connecticut’s art and science museums and galleries. The children will be exposed to the cultural aspects of the art world as well as the exciting wonders of science. Led by two experienced teachers, Mr. Bennett (science teacher) and Mrs. Bennett (art teacher), the students will travel throughout the state exploring, learning, discussing with peers from museum to museum. Scavenger hunts within museums and follow up activities will enhance the educational aspect of the adventurous week.

EXPLORE NEW HAVEN!

Let’s explore the history of New Haven! We will go on a tour of the Amistaad Memorial, Fort Nathan Hale, Lighthouse Point Park, New Haven Harbor and Yale University to name a few sites we will explore. Each day will have a road map that we will follow. We will even experience the thrill of sailing aboard a tallship the Quinnipiack, the flagship of New Haven. Hop on and get to know the famous history of New Haven.

Specific techniques for studying will be the goal of this course, with an emphasis on reading and writing strategies in the content areas. Each week the focus will be a specific subject area (social studies, science, language arts, etc.), and a specific skill (note-taking, outlining, following directions, etc.). Individual needs and learning styles will be carefully considered.

FINE ARTS
CERAMICS
Section 1: 9-10 am July 14-August 1
Tuition: $315 Grades 2-6
This course will explore the exciting world of ceramics. Students will learn about clay building techniques using a selection of approaches including slab work, coils, pinch pot and hand sculpting. Students will create a selection of memorable pieces which will be glazed and fired. Specific clay techniques will be taught such as wedging to begin, to the slip and scoring method of attaching pieces along with the final stage of glazing and firing. Students will learn the entire process from start to finish and help with the running of the kiln. Functional projects as well as ornate pieces will be created.

COLOR AND COMPOSITION
Section 1: 10-11 am July 14-August 1
Tuition: $315 Grades 2-6
This course will explore color and composition using different types of media such as colored pencils, crayons, pastels, watercolors, and acrylic paints. Students will learn about primary and secondary colors and then use this knowledge to create their unique pieces. In addition to traditional techniques on canvas boards and watercolor paper, students will experiment with many untraditional painting techniques using fingers, sponges, toothbrushes, and fingers. Pointillism, and Action painting are always incorporated into this artistic experience.

MULTI MEDIA MADNESS
Section 1: 9-10 am June 23-July 11
Tuition: $315 Grades 2-6
This course will introduce the students to a large variety of materials, concepts and techniques in a fun and creative environment. Collage, masks, clay and paper mache, tissue paper, wire and acrylic paints are examples of the many materials explored. Students will construct projects ranging from whimsical sculptures and mobiles to functional art using felt, paper, wood and even nature items! Specific techniques will be taught, experimentation encouraged and individual expression applauded.


CULTURAL DIVERSITY THROUGH THE ARTS
Section 1: 10-11 am June 23-July 11
Tuition: $315 Grades 2-6
Students will explore a variety of countries and cultures through art, while becoming aware of the diversity of each land visited. Through a “hands on” approach to artistic adventure, the students will create their own projects after learning about the individual attributes of different countries. China will offer the opportunity for Chinese Brush painting with bamboo brushes on rice paper, while in Mexico tin painting and yarn collages will be explored. France offers Impressionism along with painting outside, “Au Plein Air” style. Africa, Australia and Native American art offer additional exciting possibilities. Students will create a large variety of both two dimensional and three dimensional pieces as they travel from country to country.

COMPUTER
POWERPOINT MULTIMEDIA
Section 1: 10-11 am June 23-August 1
Tuition: $630 Grades 3-6
Whether you know Powerpoint or not, this class will give you ample opportunity to develop as much knowledge of this widely used application as you want. Students will create their own CD with pictures and music. Other computer programs will also be covered. You will learn while creating some fun projects. This course is a great opportunity for students to broaden their computer knowledge and improve their computer skills. Computer safety will be part of the program.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE
SPANISH
Section 1: 9-10 am Grades 1-4

Hola! Hola! This summer your child can begin learning Spanish! The two weeks of this class are dedicated to the Spanish language and culture. Children will learn about Spanish traditions, food, art, and music. All levels of language learners are welcome!

LATIN
Section 1: 10-11 am July 14-August 1
Tuition: $315 Grade 6
This review course is designed to strengthen students’ understanding of Latin I course materials. Focusing primarily on reading and culture, the course will use the language and culture of people living in Pompeii in the lst century AD. Grammar and vocabulary will be taught. Strongly recommended for students entering 6th grade.

MANDARIN CHINESE
Section 1: 9-10 am Grades 1-4
Tuition: $315 July 14-August 1
The emphasis for children is on learning a beginning Mandarin vocabulary through songs, games and story telling in a fun and relaxed environment. This is not an immersion program and English is also spoken in the classroom. The children will work on Mandarin vocabulary appropriate to their level of learning. Simple words and phrases and some character recognition is taught through worksheets and stories of China. There is discussion and introduction to Chinese culture through crafts and songs. Class size is limited to 10 students.
