A Message from Head of School Bob Izzo

Bob and Janet Izzo at the 2016 Homecoming football game. They have three children: Mike, who graduated from Hamden Hall in 2012 and the University of Notre Dame in 2016; Allison, who graduated in 2014 and is currently attending
Wake Forest; and Christopher, a Hamden Hall "Lifer" who is in his junior year.

Welcome to our Hamden Hall Community. We use the word “community” quite a bit on campus because of the unwavering support provided to our students by our past and present families, our alumni, and our faculty and staff.

I have the distinct pleasure of a dual vantage point: I am both a Hamden Hall parent and educator, and I see firsthand the results of The Hamden Hall Experience. Our students excel because of the opportunities they are afforded and the guidance they are provided by our esteemed faculty. We set high standards and our students respond with unflappable poise and resilience.

Yet just as important as our rigorous curriculum, Signature Programs, and myriad extracurricular activities is the foundation of social responsibility, respect, and global citizenship that is fostered in our students during their time under the pines. We care about the kinds of people our students become after they graduate.

I know you’ll view these attributes for yourself as you peruse the pages of our website. In the meantime, here are some highlights from the beginning months of our 2016-2017 school year that will provide a quick overview of what we mean by The Hamden Hall Experience:

  • Hamden Hall is one of only seven independent schools in the state this year to have two or more Semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
  • More than 50 of our current students are Legacy siblings and children of Alumni.
  • Our Lower School Mentors are 40 strong this year as they engage and contribute in the classrooms of our youngest students.
  • Hamden Hall has been “Stuffing a Bus” during the holiday season for more than a quarter of a century. Donated foodstuffs benefit local social service organizations and food pantries.
  • Our Varsity Football team won its first ever New England Tournament crown. In finishing at 11-0, the Hornets not only capped off an incredible undefeated season, which included the Fairchester Athletic Association title, they set a prep school record for most wins in a season. Go Hornets!
  • Middle School students via their annual Life is Delicious community service project will prepare and serve an evening meal at a local homeless shelter on four occasions this school year.
  • Our vocal and instrumental programs earned a record-breaking 29 spots in the Connecticut Music Educators Southern Regional Honor Choirs. Hamden Hall annually sends students to the Regional and All-State Music Festivals.
  • The 2016 Global Read Aloud permitted our Lower School students at all levels to meet and interact with students from seven states and two Canadian provinces.
  • Hamden Hall hosts an inaugural Science Festival in the spring of 2017. Winners of all Connecticut-based science fairs will present their winning posters and a panel discussion titled Science Education in the 21st Century will feature several Yale Nobel Prize Winners.
