Admissions

Hamden Hall seeks strongly motivated students. Inquiries are welcome at any time but are encouraged in the fall of the year preceding anticipated entrance. The committee arranges interviews and campus tours Monday through Friday by appointment only and invites prospective students to spend a day visiting classes. The school's Open House, held in October, provides an opportunity for interested students and their families to meet current students, faculty and parents.

All applicants must complete and return the application for admission as well as a nonrefundable fee. Candidates whose applications are completed by January 31 will be notified on March 10. Thereafter, Hamden Hall follows a policy of rolling admissions in those grades where there are vacancies.

Lower School

Admission Committee bases its decision on a review of an applicant’s developmental readiness, previous academic record, classroom visit, and the recommendation of the sending school.   A developmental preschool screening is individually administered to Pre-Kindergarten applicants.  Kindergarten and Grade One applicants are screened for reading and math readiness levels as well as developmental tasks.  Applicants for Grades Two through Four spend a day visiting the classroom.  During the visitation day, they are evaluated in reading, math and writing.  Grade Five and Six applicants visit the classroom for a day and are administered an admission examination in reading, math and writing, at scheduled times during the academic year. For more information and an application, please contact Katharine Harris at (203) 865-6158 ext 314 or via e-mail at kharris@hamdenhall.org .

Middle and Upper School

Admission is based on a personal interview and the strength of the applicant's profile. The admissions committee reviews an applicant's academic record, math and English teachers' recommendations, and the results of the admissions examination, administered at scheduled times during the academic year. The admissions committee seeks a diverse group of academically able students who are eager to participate in the life of the school. For more information and an application, please contact the Janet Izzo at (203) 865-6158 ext. 238 or via e-mail at jizzo@hamdenhall.org.
